The most successful horse in the history of the Hong Kong Gold Cup is River Verdon who won the Group 1 event on three occasions (in 1992, 1993 and 1994) and in 1994 became the only horse in history to complete the Triple Crown.
Other horses that have won the Hong Kong Cup on multiple occasions are imported Irish stayer Indigenous, who took out the race in 1998 and 1999, and John Moore-trained Viva Pataca (2008 and 2009) who was named Hong Kong Champion Stayer on four occasions.
The most successful jockey in the recent history of the Hong Kong Cup is Australian Darren Beadman who won the race three years in a row for John Moore-trained gallopers; taking out the race with Viva Pataca in 2008 and 2009 and Collection in 2010.
The Hong Kong Gold Cup is one of the most popular betting races in Hong Kong and favourites generally have a good record in the race and in recent years a number of quality horses have claimed victory in the prestigious race.
Anthony Cruz-trained California Memory took out the 2011 edition of the race after finishing third in the Group 1 Stewards Cup and the popular Ambitious Dragon won the race in 2012 and went close to winning the Triple Crown after being victorious in the Stewards Cup at the start of his campaign.
Military Attack had poor form heading into the 2013 Hong Kong Gold Cup but won the race in impressive fashion, which started a winning streak that included victories in the Premier Plate, Group 1 Audemars Piguet QE II Cup and Group 1 Singapore International Cup.
